Do you enjoy wood craft, spending time outdoors, and stewarding our woodlands? Join us on February 22nd from 9 AM to 2 PM for a hands-on day that combines these passions. Our Craft and Stewardship Workshop focuses on splitting red maple for beautiful basket weaving. This event is perfect for outdoor volunteers who want to learn new skills while making a positive impact on the environment.
The red maple is abundant in our region, adapting well to various environmental conditions. Learning how to use red maple helps us engage with this valuable resource, promoting healthier forests and leading to practical skills in basket making.
By attending the workshop, you’ll play a vital role in stewardship. We’ll start the day by strategically placing cut trees along the slope of the landscape. This method helps retain leaves and organic matter, which might otherwise wash away.
After our initial stewardship project, we’ll dive into the fascinating art of red maple splitting. Traditionally, white oak has been the preferred wood for basketry, but its availability has diminished in recent years. Fortunately, red maple has a rich history in basket making and serves as an excellent, sustainable substitute. During the workshop, you’ll learn how to create usable basket splits, gaining a new appreciation for local materials that can redefine your crafting projects.

Throughout the day, you will gain valuable hands-on experience, transforming maple logs into basket splits, which can be used in future weaving workshops. This practical work will not only sharpen your crafting abilities but also deepen your appreciation for the resources found in our environment.
As conservancy volunteers, your involvement is crucial for preserving our landscapes. Participating in events like the red maple basket making workshop directly enhances our conservancy. Let’s gather to learn, create, and strengthen our connection between craftsmanship and nature.
Join us to celebrate the art of basket making with red maple as we take an important step towards nurturing our invaluable natural resources. We can’t wait to see you there! This is a unique chance to enjoy the outdoors and craft something beautiful. Please register for the workshop by clicking below:
