Address: 305 Friends Way, Harpers Ferry
Date: July 19th
Time: 8:15 PM
What to Expect on the Evening Walk
Our adventure begins with an informative talk led by Julie Zeyzus. She will share her deep knowledge about the species we might encounter. You’ll learn about the behaviors and habitats of owls. Julie will also introduce you to the ecology of bats. Moreover, you will discover fascinating facts about nocturnal critters like the firefly, a bug that lights up summer nights.
This initial discussion will set the tone for our exploration, ensuring participants leave with a greater appreciation for these creatures’ roles in nature.

Following our talk, we will embark on a short hike to a nearby stream. Here, the sounds of the forest will surround us. Picture this: the distant hooting of an owl echoing in the air, the flutter of bats on their nighttime journeys, and the soft buzz of insects thriving in the dark. This captivating experience will leave everyone eager to connect with nature.
Utilizing Technology to Connect with Wildlife

One exciting aspect of our event is the use of ultrasonic detecting equipment. Each participant will have the chance to download a free app called Echo Meter Touch Bat Detector from Wildlife Acoustics. This app is available on major platforms like Google Play and the Apple App Store and will allow you to connect your smartphone or tablet to Julie’s ultrasonic microphones.
With this technology, you can “listen” to bats in real-time. You will hear sounds that are too high for the human ear but critical for bats for navigation and hunting. The software also lets you record these sounds for later exploration, enhancing your understanding of these remarkable animals. Engaging with this technology not only adds excitement but also deepens our knowledge of the critical role bats play in ecosystems.
What to Bring to Enhance Your Experience
Preparation is crucial to enjoying your night in the forest. Here are some recommendations for making the most of your adventure:
Comfortable Clothing: Dress in layers to adapt to temperature changes once the sun sets.
Sturdy Footwear: Wear shoes that are good for walking on trails to ensure comfort and safety.
Flashlight: A reliable light source will help you navigate and observe your surroundings safely.
Above all, bring a curious spirit and a desire to learn. This event is a perfect opportunity to connect with family and friends while fostering respect for wildlife and nature.
